The Socratic Paradox
When Chaerephon asked the Oracle at Delphi whether anyone was wiser than Socrates, she replied that there was no one wiser. Through dialogue with a number of men who claimed to be wise, Socrates came to understand the meaning of the Oracle: while others think they know something when they don’t, Socrates realizes that he doesn’t know anything. It is in this one respect that Socrates is wiser than others, for he alone does not claim to know what he knows not! (Cf. Plato: The Last Days of Socrates, 36-7)
